Master Maine Guide · Registered since 1977
Chip began guiding with his father Warren and grandfather Herb at age 11 in 1971. He has just completed his 232nd Allagash trip — more than any other guide in history. A Master Maine Guide with more than fifty years of Allagash experience, Chip brings a depth of knowledge of these rivers that simply cannot be replicated.
Away from the water, Chip spent his twenties as a World Cup downhill racer for the U.S. Ski Team, and has coached developing alpine racers at Carrabassett Valley Academy during winter months. On the canoe, he has captured first place medals in several National Downriver Whitewater Open Canoe Championships and is a 28-time national canoe poling champion. He is also a whitewater canoe and kayak instructor and a private pilot.

Lani joined Allagash Canoe Trips in 1988 and has since paddled the Allagash more than 166 times, in addition to numerous trips on the West Branch Penobscot, St. Croix, St. John, Moose River, and the Bonaventure in the Gaspé. She has also worked as a whitewater raft guide and kayak instructor.
Lani has won several national titles in downriver whitewater canoe racing and is the reigning female national canoe poling champion. In the winter months she leads backcountry Nordic ski trips and has served as recreation director for Maine Huts & Trails in western Maine. She is also a licensed massage therapist and physical trainer — which, guests will tell you, comes in handy after a full day on the water.

Maine Guide since 1957 · 1938–2019
Warren Cochrane began running Allagash trips in 1951 alongside his father Herb, and led trips in Maine and Canada for more than five decades until his retirement in 1999 — more than 120 Allagash trips across 48 years of guiding. A former teacher and coach, Warren taught workshops on canoe poling and efficient paddling, and won national awards in both poling and downriver whitewater canoe racing. He was a foundational force in protecting the Allagash Wilderness Waterway from overdevelopment and was known as much for his sharp wit as his deep knowledge of the river.
After a twenty-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease, Warren passed away peacefully in February 2019. His love of canoeing was only surpassed by his passion for sharing it with others. He is deeply missed by everyone who paddled with him.
